Williams sisters retain doubles crown

Venus ans Serena retained thier doubles trophy at Wimbledon

Serena and Venus Williams have beaten Rennae Stubbs and Samantha Stosur to retain their women’s doubles title at Wimbledon.

The pair had little time to recover from the singles final they had contested earlier on Saturday afternoon but managed to win 7-6 (7/4) 6-4.

Indeed, Serena’s exploits seemed to have taken a toll as she dropped her first service game to give Stubbs and Stosur a glimmer of a chance at the start of the first set.

However, the American duo soon began to assert themselves on the match and got back to parity late in the first set when they broke Stubbs’ serve.

That forced a tie-break which the sisters managed to win with two mini-breaks of serve.

Stubbs continued to struggle on her serve and had to save a succession of break points in the third game of the second set.

Even when the Australian pair gained advantage Stubbs contrived to hit the ball into the back of her partner.

Although the third seeds eventually held serve they dropped a service game the next time Stubbs served, allowing the Williams’ to take command at 4-3.

At 5-3 the sisters had a championship point on Stosur’s serve but she held forcing Serena to serve for the match.

She did so with aplomb, clinching the title with a 112mph ace, to gain her second title of the day.ADNFCR-2262-ID-19250591-ADNFCR
