Quins tie up Esders loan move

Injury-hit Quins sign back-rower Ryan Esders on one-month loan

Injury-hit Harlequins have secured the signing of Hull KR back-rower Ryan Esders on a one-month loan deal as emergency cover.

Following impressive performances with York he received their Young Player of the Year award and returned to Rovers for Super League XIV.

The 22-year-old, who joined Rovers from York City Knights where he won their young player of the year award in 2007, is capable of playing in several positions.

Quins are missing a number of players through injury and Brian McDermott is hopeful the youngster can plug some holes in the short term.

"Ryan has caught the eye of several of our coaches over the years at both reserves and youth level and he has been on our list for a while," McDermott explained.

"With the recent injuries facing our squad, including Rob Purdham and Luke Dorn, we felt we needed to bring some cover in and I believe Ryan is a versatile player that can do a job for us."

Esders said he is excited by the move down south and his prospects for playing Super League rugby in 2009.

"This club is developing a great reputation for bringing through young players and I’m really glad of the opportunity to play here," he said.

"I have a lot of respect for head coach Brian McDermott and am looking forward to working with him and the team."

Esders has been in training with the squad this week and is available to go straight into the Quins squad for this Saturday’s match against Huddersfield Giants at the Twickenham Stoop.ADNFCR-2262-ID-19256023-ADNFCR
