Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is plotting a European Super League.
The move could see Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal turn their back on the Premier League to join the new competition.
Perez is critical of Uefa’s handling of the Champions League, claiming the format of the competition does not suit the biggest clubs.
The 62-year-old wants to maximise TV revenue and sponsorship deals for Europe’s big clubs. But a Super League could potentially threaten the future of the smallest sides in the Premier League.
Perez, who returned for a second stint as president of the Spanish giants last month, has launched a revolution at Real in the transfer market. The Spanish giants have spent over £150 million in signing winger Cristiano Ronaldo, playmaker Kaka and striker Karim Benzema.
Now the Madrid president wants talks with Uefa president Michel Platini about setting up a new league.
Perez said: "What we need to work out with UEFA is a European Super League that guarantees that all the top teams play each other all the time - something that does not happen in the current Champions League."
Perez added his proposed format could be implemented "without abandoning the national leagues".
