Actor Edward Woodward dies aged 79

Actor Edward Woodward, best known for his work in The Equalizer and The Wicker Man, has died at the age of 79, his agent has confirmed.

RADA-trained Woodward, an OBE, was last seen on the big screen in action comedy Hot Fuzz and had starred in BBC1 soap EastEnders earlier this year.

Woodward’s agent Janet Glass confirmed his death in a statement that praised his "brave spirit and wonderful humour".

It said the actor had been long admired for "unforgettable roles" and was "equally fine and courageous in real life, never losing his brave spirit and wonderful humour throughout his illness".

Ms Glass added: "He was further sustained by the love of his wife, Michele, children, Tim, Peter, Sarah and Emily, his grandchildren and numerous friends.

"His passing will leave a huge gap in many lives."

British actor Simon Pegg, who worked with Woodward on Hot Fuzz, posted an update on Twitter expressing his sadness at Woodward’s passing.

"So sorry to hear we have lost the great Edward Woodward," he wrote. "Feel lucky to have worked with him. Sgt. Howie, Tom Weaver, we will miss you."ADNFCR-2262-ID-19462305-ADNFCR
