David Cameron has said he and his party are ready if Gordon Brown decides to call a snap general election.
Mr Cameron revealed on Sunday he thinks the election will take place on March 25th and insisted the Tories were "all systems go".
Speaking to Sky News the Conservative leader said: "We should have an election because we need a new government, we need a fresh start.
"I hope the election can come as early in the new year as possible. We are certainly ready to go… I’ve been saying internally that I think March 25th is quite a likely date if the prime minister wants to have any freedom of manoeuvre."
Mr Brown can call the election any time before June and had been expected to choose May 6th.
Speculation of an earlier election comes as recent polls show Labour starting to cut into the Tories led.
A YouGov poll in the Sunday Times revealed the Conservatives are on 40 per cent, Labour in 31 per cent and the Liberal Democrats on 16 per cent.
Only last weekend the Conservatives held a 13-point lead.
Schools secretary Ed Balls said Labour was "ready" for the election, whenever it may come.
"I’ve heard nobody talking about going for a snap or early election. But whenever it comes, we will be ready," he told the BBC.
