Avatar has become the highest grossing film of all time at the UK box office, surpassing the takings of the Abba-inspired Mamma Mia!
Official figures show James Cameron’s sci-fi epic has now taken £71.6 million at the UK box office, repeating its success around the world.
Avatar has continually held the number one position in the UK box office since its release on December 17th.
Mamma Mia!, remains the second-highest grossing film with a UK lifetime box office of £69.17 million.
In the US, where the nine-time Oscar nominated film has smashed every record going, Avatar was finally knocked off the top of the box office chart by the romantic drama Dear John.
The film, starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried, took $32.4 million (£20.6 million), beating Avatar’s $23.6 million (£15.2 million) and ending its seven-week run at the top of the charts.
